Elise Coletta graduated from Providence College, the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed her family medicine residency training at Brown Medical School/Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island from 1981 to 1984. She then started her career as a teacher in family medicine.
Dr. Coletta was a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine and Chief of Gerontology at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. She dedicated her life to educating colleagues, resident physicians and medical students in family medicine and geriatrics. She served the Department of Family Medicine at Brown University for over two decades and consistently demonstrated patience, integrity, compassion and generosity in the pursuit of excellence in her teaching and clinical practice.
In her tenure at Memorial Hospital, Dr. Coletta was the director of Medical Care of the Rehabilitation Unit from 1986 to 1993, Assistant Director of the Division of Gerontology and Rehabilitation from 1989 to 1993, Chief of Gerontology from 1993 to 2000. In 2001, Dr. Coletta became Medical Director of the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island Homecare Program and Associate Medical Director of Medicare at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island. She served as President of the Medical Staff from 1997 to 1999 and also served on numerous hospital and university committees to improve the education of medical and nursing personnel and to enhance the quality of patient care.
Dr. Coletta received numerous awards including the Brown University Women in Medicine, Mary Putnam-Jacobi Award for outstanding faculty member and mentor, and the Teacher of the Year Award in Family Medicine in 1992 and 1995, respectively. In addition, Dr. Coletta demonstrated leadership as an active member of the Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians and was a strong advocate for women in medicine.
FUND HISTORY:
The Elise Coletta Leadership Endowment for Family Medicine Teaching and Research Fund was established in 2006 through generous memorial gifts from colleagues, friends and the Coletta family in memory of Elise Coletta, MD.
The Endowment Fund supports research, educational, service and advocacy to advance family medicine, medical education, women in medicine and geriatrics.
SUBMITTING PROPOSALS:
Proposals are being accepted on a rolling basis for funding by the Elisa M. Coletta, MD Educational and Leadership Endowment Fund. These grants are funded through the generous gifts of colleagues, friends, and family in memory of Dr. Elise Coletta. Dr. Coletta was a member of the residency class of 1984, faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine, and Chief of Gerontology at Memorial Hospital who dedicated her life to educating colleagues, resident physicians, and medical students in family medicine and geriatrics. The Endowment Fund will support research, education, service, and advocacy projects consistent with the spirit of Dr. Coletta’s own professional priorities, namely efforts to advance family medicine, medical education, women in medicine, and geriatrics.
The funding limit is $5000 per proposal; however, most previously funded proposals have been approximately $1500.
