The Brown Family Medicine residency has had a longstanding commitment to recruiting, training, and retaining as faculty a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
The Family Care Center and Thundermist Health Center in West Warwick both serve ethnically, racially, culturally and linguistically diverse populations in the communities of Pawtucket and Central Falls, and West Warwick.
We have designed a comprehensive curriculum to prepare residents to care for all patients while addressing the unique medical needs of marginalized patients including: sexual and gender minorities; those who are unhoused; refugees; and those who have been adversely affected by structural and systemic inequities.
Our community rotations provide time with local partners to learn about resources available to our patients. Our residents spend time at Clinica Esperanza, Progreso Latino, House of Hope and with the Rhode Island Special Olympics.
Our residency is actively engaged with a number of initiatives of the Brown Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion including:
- Supporting the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA)
- The Diversity in Visiting Student Program,
- The 2nd Look for Underrepresented Students Day – a time during which applicants who self-identify as underrepresented in medicine visit clinical sites, meet with residency leadership, and attend a networking dinner alongside applicants from all Brown residency programs.
