
The Department of Family Medicine congratulates Dr. Jeffrey Borkan, Assistant Dean for Primary Care-Population Health, Professor of Family Medicine, Professor of Medical Science and Dr. Katie de Klerk, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine on being award recipients at the Rhode Island Medical Society Convivium 213th Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner.

Dr. Borkan received the Dr. John Clarke Award, which is given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to public life through outstanding civic leadership and service. As chair of the department of family medicine, he elevated primary care and co-created the nation’s first MD-MSc program in Population Medicine.
Dr. Borkan has also helped shape policy to address healthcare disparities and strengthen the primary care workforce nationally and in Rhode Island.
Dr. Katie de Klerk was recognized with the 4 Under 40 Award, a program designed to recognize four physicians under the age of 40 who practice in Rhode Island that demonstrate and exemplify commitment to their profession. As President of the Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians and Associate Medical Director at Thundermist Health Center, she advanced primary care through policy innovation, strategic leadership and active advocacy at both the state and national levels.
Dr. de Klerk has revitalized professional networks, mentored peers and testified on dozens of health care bills that have shaped policy debate around key issues.
