Maxwell (Max) Van Hoven, MD
Biography
Hi! I’m Max and I am from Reisterstown, Maryland. I went to undergrad at Washington College (also in Maryland) where I studied Biology and was the shortest rower on the rowing team. After a couple years in Philadelphia, where I worked as a medical scribe in an Emergency Department, I made my way to University of Maryland School of Medicine. I always wanted to be a Family Medicine Physician, and that was cemented during my rotations in medical school. But looking back at those years, I'm most proud of my role as Co-President of our LGBTQ+ Health Interest Group. Through that role I helped plan events focused primarily on LGBTQ+ health education and awareness. Our group hosted several pronouns workshops with medical students, held several social events, and advocated for various queer health didactic sessions, which were ultimately incorporated into the school curriculum. These events included many conversations regarding health inequity, not just limited to LGBTQ+ patients, and I look forward to continuing these important conversations and advocating for necessary changes throughout my career.
I was initially drawn to Brown’s Family Medicine Residency due to their training in gender affirming care, and after numerous conversations with residents/faculty, I came to appreciate everyone's amazing commitment towards working for their communities, especially with regard to underserved patient populations, as well as facilitating strong clinical training. I am so excited to continue my journey in Family Medicine here in Providence, and I’m looking forward to the experiences I will have in a state that is not Maryland! In my free time I enjoy: taking my (well technically my boyfriend's) Chocolate Lab, Moose, to dog parks, sampling various dog-friendly restaurants/bars, weight lifting, rooting for the Baltimore Ravens, watching my Fantasy Football team dominate regular season play just to promptly, yet consistently, implode during the playoffs, PlayStation gaming, and Magic the Gathering.
